Auricular acupuncture is a modality of treatment for chemical Abuse/or dependence. Auricular acupuncture will be used as a co-adjunctive treatment modality for patients’ relaxation purposes: craving, withdrawal symptoms, drug-seeking behavior, underlying stress and tension and/or aggressive behavior which has correlated with present or past drug use.

Patient’s participation in this treatment modality is strictly voluntary. Patient consent to participate must be appropriately documented in the medical record. There are no medical contra-indications to the use of auricular acupuncture treatment.

Auricular acupuncture is provided in the treatment area located on the first floor of Lincoln Recovery Center. Patients receive five thin needles (0.25-mm dia., 15mm long) that are inserted into the appropriate area of the ear cartilage ridge, located next to the outer rim of both ears.

Ear points used for detoxification are labeled “Shen men”, “Kidney”, “Liver”, “Sympathetic”, and “Lung” in acupuncture texts. The patient is instructed to relax for 45 minutes with needles in place. The needles are then removed. Only sterile needles are used since strict antisepsis is necessary to avoid infections. Before needles insertion, the auricular points are cleaned with 75% alcohol.

Alcohol sterile package pads, and packs of 2x2 sterile gauge are located on two tables in the acupuncture treatment room. The single-use disposable acupuncture needles and disposable surgical gloves are kept in the front desk in the acupuncture room. The used disposable needles are placed in wall mounted tan bio-hazard sharps only containers near each table. There are hand sanitizers also mounted on wall near the two tables for easy accessibility.
